Three young Nunavummiut have been awarded the 2023 Danielle Moore Scholarship, worth $2,000 toward their ongoing education.

The recipients of the scholarship are Derek Aullaannaaq Qimuksiraaq Irwin-Van Eindhoven of Rankin Inlet, Pamela Tannis Emingak of Cambridge Bay, and Kyra Kilabuk of Iqaluit.

The three students were selected from a pool of 49 applicants, Pinnquaq Association spokesperson Ward Alsop announced Tuesday.

The scholarship was launched in partnership with the family of Danielle Moore, an educator in Pinnquaq Association’s Iqaluit Makerspace, who died when flight ET302 crashed in Ethiopia on March 10, 2019, killing more than 150 people.

Moore had been on her way to Kenya to represent Canada at the United Nations Environment Assembly.

The scholarship is available exclusively to Nunavummiut to assist recipients with ongoing formal and informal education and skills development, Alsop said.

Winners are selected each year by the Moore family and by the Pinnquaq Association, which delivers programs to cultivate skills in STEAM, or science, technology, engineering, art and math.

All three recipients are in their second year of post-secondary education at Nunavut Arctic College: Kilabuk is a bachelor of science in nursing student; Tannis Emingak is a student in the Nunavut teachers education program; and Irwin-Van Eindhoven is in the environmental technology program.

“All of this year’s applicants spoke to the importance of using the knowledge they gain to educate and inspire others. Danielle would have loved that,” said Pinnguaq founder and CEO Ryan Oliver in a release.
