5-way race shaping up for NTI vice-president
Vote slated for Dec. 12, along with regional Inuit association elections
Five people joined the race for the vice-presidency of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., whose election will be held Dec. 12.
Jack Anawak, Larry Audlaluk, Paul Irngaut, Jacopoosie Peter and Clayton Tartak threw their hats in the ring for the organization’s second-highest position, according to a news release NTI issued Friday night.
NTI published the unofficial list of candidates after nominations closed at 5 p.m. Candidates who signed up still have an opportunity until the end of the day Monday to remove their names from the list.
Vice-president is the only position to be filled at NTI, the organization responsible for ensuring the federal and territorial agreements fulfil their obligations under the Nunavut Agreement to Inuit throughout the territory.
NTI’s elections are staggered so only some of its executive positions are open at the same time.
President Aluki Kotierk was elected to a four-year term in February 2021. That election was scheduled to be held in December 2020 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to NTI, three regional Inuit associations will also hold their elections on Dec. 12. Voters must be at least 16 years old as of election day and be enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement.
There are five ways to vote in the NTI race — at advance polls on Dec 5, on election day, by mobile poll, proxy vote or mail-in ballot.
Nice to see a young guy taking interest, fresh.
Young Clayton: my hat off to you, fresh, and so many old has been…that is the Nunavut problem…a plaque.
Jack and Larry should really step aside, you guys have done your share already. Need new blood in the leadership.
Here comes the 25% voter turn out
The 2021 election turnout was 17.5%.
25% is wildly optimistic, last few elections were in the mid to high teens!
I hope that NTI or NN provide information on each candidate; their platform, background and why they think we should vote for them. Same for the QIA election.
I think they usually do, however what they should also do is a follow up of who is elected to know if they actually follow through with what they campaign on.
Like do one for Aluki right now as well. What did she say she would do? and what has she actually done?
Everyone go vote please, I don’t care for who just go vote please
All respect to Jack, but isn’t his time long past due? Having a bunch of old, white-haired politicians in this position does no good for young or middle-aged Inuit.
Where’s the Kitikmeot Inuit Association’s list of candidates.
Still no information on who the candidate are. Our regional office has gone to the dogs. So embarassing! Time to clean up office more. The recently resigned President and one ED is not enough!
Remember only things will change if you go out and vote. Remember who the board is then and who is still on now! Get out and vote!
Annoyed!!
