50 potential lithium mining sites located in Nunavik, company says
Sites yet to be explored, says Orford Mining Corp.
A mineral exploration company has identified dozens of “high priority targets” for potential lithium mining operations in Nunavik.
Orford Mining Corp. announced in a news release June 16 that it has located 50 potential sites over 455 square kilometres of territory.
None of these sites have been explored yet but Orford is interested in them after reviewing government mapping data and lake bottom sediment data.
The company said those areas are believed to have lithium pegmatite, a crystalized rock that contains spodumene, which can be one of the primary sources lithium.
Orford’s summer lithium exploration program begins in July.
Lithium is used to create rechargeable batteries for products ranging from laptop computers to electric vehicles, cellphones and grid storage.
YOU HEAR THAT MY FELLOW INUKS , JOBS COMMING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Razing the earth we live and depend upon to sustain us for a short term benefit sounds well pretty short sighted. It’s the goose and its excrement, how do we get back in there.
If you are on a laptop, or use a smart phone, you are part of your own problem.
I like to think Julien lives in the enchanted forest.
Edit ed.
How do we get it back in there.
I think lithium is being replaced by silica due to its much better energy storage capacity and charging time
Tesla funded searches for lithium
The goose and droppings is to say making a mess with mines is not so easily remedied. Promises of things will be taken care of to clean the pollution is risky. The reduction of the massive consumption habit in Canada is needed, a good alternative to that way of life would mean far less waste.
Bringing to here things that work well in other regions/countries is an idea to use. In less wealthy Mexico the public transport operates and serves the people well. Not expensive, no long waits for your ride and so on. We could do well with fewer vehicles but with it that great service.
What mining does to Nunavik is put large sums of money, otherwise, peanuts for the mining companies, but in hands of Nunavik, it’s becomes devastating from alcohol and drugs, period. Get me more.
“If youre using a phone, laptop” yada yada.. this lithium doesnt compare to the amount needed to power a car that would not even be able to charge in our winters.
-18c in drummondville, my friends car (tesla 3) would only charge upto 23%. No more.. and it took literally 6hours. That strain burns the battery and really kills the lifetime of lithium.
Phones, laptops, and other devices with lithium batteries do not even get close to the amount needed for cars that will only be used in the south. And for what cost? Poison our waters in which our food is produced and bred? As Inuit, we rely more on our lands harvesting bounty than most, if not all, people with lithium mines. Lithium is a very destructive metal to process and would put people and culture in a very vulnerable position. Imagine the fuel spills that happened a while ago on a much larger scale, and yet the large majority of the clean up being unattainable for lithium.
Our lands and people are and should be priority.. not some vehicles only meant for luxury in the south.
Say no to these mines, stop looking at the quick $$ in our pockets, the 2 mines have already seperated Inuit of each community, jealousy, drugs, alcohol, and the worst part we’re not watching is the environment, the tailings that will be around for many decades if not centuries, no money to individuals and if mines come into Nunavik build infrastructure and renovate existing buildings, get things for our children, grandchildren such as playgrounds complete with lighting, renovate arenas, community centers, youth houses, elders homes, treatment centers in more communities, outdoor playing fields, enough of this family and that family
