Board slaps fines on more Iqaluit liquor licence holders
Navigator bar, Elks disciplined for serving drunk people
The Chartroom Lounge, a bar located inside Iqaluit’s Navigator Inn, will suffer an eight-day licence suspension from March 26 until April 3 and pay a $10,000 fine, the Nunavut Liquor Licencing Board ruled March 23.
The board said in a news release that the lounge, at a hearing held March 22, admitted serving alcohol to intoxicated persons and allowing intoxicated persons on its premises, in violation of the Nunavut Liquor Act.
The fine and the licence suspension are a joint recommendation negotiated by a lawyer representing the Chartroom Lounge and a lawyer representing Nunavut liquor enforcement, the news release said.
This is the second time in a year that the liquor board has disciplined the Chartroom Lounge.
In June 2011, the board fined the bar $20,000 for four infractions of the Liquor Act and imposed an eight-day licence suspension.
The allegations last year included a fight between two patrons and the verbal abuse of a liquor inspector by a Chartroom customer.
Also on March 23, the board imposed a $2,000 fine on the B.P.O. Elks Club in Iqaluit and suspended their licence for one day, on March 27.
The board said in a news release that the Elks served alcohol to intoxicated persons and allowed intoxicated persons on their premises.
The liquor board has the power to suspend liquor licences for a maximum period of 12 months.
On March 22, the board imposed a $5,000 fine and a two-day licence suspension on the Kickin’ Caribou Pub, which is located inside Hotel Arctic.
