City of Iqaluit to pick up garbage, cardboard on different days
Residents also asked to separate wood, metal, from regular waste
The City of Iqaluit is making more changes to local garbage collection.
After requesting that residents separate their cardboard garbage earlier this month, the City of Iqaluit is now asking residents to also separate wood and metal from their regular household waste.
In a July 29 release, the city asked residents to put all household waste — excluding wood, cardboard and metal — in regular standard size garbage bags.
That change will help reduce the volume of combustible waste going into the landfill, the city said July 29, to minimize the likelihood of another fire.
Iqaluit’s public works department has been working to create more space at its troubled landfill site, where a 70-day-old dump fire continues to smoulder.
The latest changes, approved by city council last week, include the purchase of a burner box for wood and paper waste.
Clean combustible waste, such as cardboard and clean wood that is collected separately, will be processed in the new air curtain burner.
Priced at $155,000, the equipment can be moved around the city, and does not emit smoke or other pollutants, the city said last week.
While the city is requesting that regular household waste be put into standard size garbage bags, city officials have also asked that paper products – cardboard, cereal boxes, juice and mill boxes, for example – be bundled when possible and put in a large blue bag.
City crews will now pick up cardboard and garbage on separate days: see the new schedule below.
