Distraught Clyde River man to get medical assessment

A distraught Clyde River man — arrested at about 10:25 p.m. Aug. 20 after a 12-hour standoff — will be assessed by a medical practitioner, RCMP said in a news release.

“We thank the people of Clyde River for their support and assistance during this incident and we are grateful that this has ended peacefully,” Supt. Hilton Smee said in an RCMP news release.

At about 9:50 a.m. that day, police received a call about a “distraught male” at house 103 in Clyde River.

“This male was alone in the house and was allegedly in possession of a rifle,” police said in the news release.

With help from members of the Clyde River fire department, who manned barricades, police kept people away from the area.

“The mayor and hamlet officials were consulted and supported the police operation in the interest of community safety,” police said.

At the same time, they sent an emergency response team from Iqaluit and negotiators attempted to contact the 41-year-old man.

The team arrested him at around 10:25 p.m. “Numerous firearms were seized from his residence,” police said.

The man, who has not yet been named, “will be taken before a medical practitioner for assessment.”

No one was injured in the incident. Police have not stated what charges will be laid.
