Iqaluit seeks fix for landfill runoff
Federal regulators complained about uncontrolled run-off
Iqaluit City Council approved Aug. 24 a $300,000 project to shore up the mounds of earth that control the water running off the city’s landfill.
The project is needed after federal regulators ordered the city in 2009 to improve drainage systems at the landfill.
The order came after a series of “uncontrolled run-off discharges” around the landfill.
A second phase, including water storage ponds, would likely go ahead after the city figures out how it will shut down and replace the landfill, which is over capacity.
Nunavut Excavating won the contract and will start work in September.
