Iqaluit thrift shop not an Anglican project

I have noted in recent stories about the Anglican church that you have included the Iqaluit thrift shop as one of the church’s social development programs.

As a founding member of the Piviniit Society, I would like to correct your error.

The Piviniit Society was established in 2005 as a non-denominational community organization with the goal of establishing a thrift store in Iqaluit.

The society was incorporated in 2007 as a not-for-profit organization and its members were fortunate in negotiating with the Qayuqtuvik (soup kitchen) Society to secure space in the new building being constructed on the Anglican church’s property.

Since mid-2009, Piviniit Society has leased the thrift store space and we pay rent that contributes significantly to covering the operational costs of the building, which also houses the soup kitchen and food bank.

We have always enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, a good, collaborative relationship with our building neighbours and appreciate that this works well for the whole community.

However, I wish to clarify that we are not an Anglican church program and are not affiliated with the church, but are a financially independent community operation.
