Iqaluit elders’ society gets a new manager

Iqaluit’s Pairijait Tigumivik Elder’s Society will see some changes this summer, when Caroline Anawak takes over as the centre’s general manager.

Anawak will replace long-time manager Jim Taylor, who first started working at the centre in 1997.

Anawak has worked in a number of senior management positions in the field of health and social services in Nunavut, including with YWCA Agvvik Nunavut and the Government of Nunavut.

She recently served as president of Local 5 of the Nunavut Employees Union.

“I’m very happy and very excited to be joining the society, and carrying on their excellent work,” said Anawak, in a July 11 release from the society.

“The service they provide has touched most of us and our families, at one time or another,” she said. “Pairijait Tigumivik Elder’s Society is an important part of the community, and I’m looking forward to being part of their team.”

The Pairijait Tigumivik Society was created in 1987 to help serve the needs of elders living in Iqaluit.

Over the last 27 years, the society has grown to oversee two operations in Iqaluit, the Tammaativvik Iqaluit patient boarding home and the Iqaluit Elders’ Centre, both of which provide accommodations and support services for the elders and for Nunavummiut passing through Iqaluit on medical travel.
