Equipped with three computers and a bookshelf loaded with job training and employment resource material, Kakivak Association’s new employment resource centre is ready to go.
At the new centre at the Parnaivik Building in Iqaluit, which officially opened June 20, you’ll also find a full-time staff person, Jeannie Smith, who can help you get started with writing your resume and cover letter for use in job applications.
“We’ve been offering services like this but it’s mostly been one-on-one. We realized this needed to be a priority,” Kakivak’s career services coordinator, Rozy Singh said.
And Iqaluit’s office isn’t the only one to supply job search services like this one: since May 13 similar employment resource centres have opened in other Baffin communities, every one staffed and equipped with a computer and a mini-library, thanks to money from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.
In Iqaluit, in addition to the computer area, you can find two boards showing job and training opportunities.
“The main goal is linking the unemployed with employers who have openings,” Singh said.
You can drop by the centre any time, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

If you’re looking for a job, Jeannie Smith, the intake clerk for the Kakivak Association’s new employment resource centre, can help you. The centre is designated for people to drop in, Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the Parnaivik Building. There, you can use its computers and other resources, and check out the new job and training boards. (PHOTO BY SAMANTHA DAWSON)
