Starting Nov. 24, if you want your kids to participate in after-school activities at Nanook elementary school in Apex, you’ll have to make sure they’re in school all day — and that they don’t arrive late.
That was the message to parents and guardians for the school’s 45 students, which was circulated on Facebook by Nanook school and the Apex District Education Authority.
“All after school programming at Nanook School will only be available to students who have attended the entire day of class,” read the message.
Unless absences are planned and prior arrangements have been made with the school administration, anyone who’s more than 15 minutes late arriving at school in the morning or after lunch won’t be able to participate in after-school activities — such as the school’s popular cooking club.
Exceptions will be made for medical appointments and other “excusable absences or lateness,” the message said.
Other schools in Nunavut are also tackling absenteeism.
Recently, the John Arnalukjuak in Arviat school said it would de-register students with low attendance in line with Nunavut policy, which says attendance is the responsibility of students and their caregivers.
