The Kativik School Board’s council of commissioners got a makeover Nov. 16 when all but three communities voted in new faces to represent them on education issues.

Three communities welcome back returning commissioners: Sarah Beaulne was re-elected in Puvirnituq, Peter Papialuk in Kuujjuaraapik and Aloupa Taqulik in Kangirsuk.

And here are the new faces that make up the council:

• Kangiqsualujjuaq: Maggie Mae Emudluk Imbeault;

• Kuujjuaq: Mary Tukkiapik Mesher (acclaimed);

• Tasiujaq: Pasha Berthe;

• Aupaluk: Martin Scott (acclaimed);

• Kangiqsujuaq: Jessica Argnak;

• Salluit: Annie Alaku;

• Ivujivik: Thomassie Mangiuk;

• Akulivik: Makusi Qinuajuaq;and,

• Inukjuak: Johnny Kasudluak.

In Quaqtaq, the Nov. 16 election resulted in a tie between two candidates. Voters went back to the polls Nov. 23 and elected a new commission, Sammy Tukkiapik.

In Inukjuak, newly-elected commissioner Johnny Kasudluak upset incumbent Alacie Nalukturuk, the long-time president of the council of commissioners.

Fourteen commissioners are universally elected to the KSB’s governing body sit for a three-year term.

The Kativik Regional Government appoints a 15th non-elected commissioner (currently Allan Brown of Kuujjuaraapik).

From that group of 15, commissioners choose a five-member executive, whose role it is to carry out the school board’s policies and contracts.

The board meets at least four times a year and administers a budget of more than $70 million.
