Man dies on board NEAS-owned ship headed towards Quebec
The man, 26, was a member of the supply vessel’s crew
Newfoundland and Labrador’s major crimes unit is investigating the sudden death of a man who was a crew member aboard the Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping Ltd. cargo vessel the MV Umiavut.
Crew members found the 26-year-old man’s body in his cabin after he failed to report for duty on the morning of Sept. 16.
“RCMP Major Crimes Unit West are on board the supply vessel Umiavut investigating the sudden death of one of the crew members while it was in transit from Nunavut to Montreal, Quebec,” said a Sept. 19 RCMP news release.
The Sûreté du Québec, Quebec’s provincial police force, secured the ship offshore Blanc-Sablon, the easternmost community in Quebec.
RCMP members are also on the scene to continue the investigation into the man’s death.
His body has been flown to St. John’s for an autopsy.
Police did not release the identity of the man.
The Umiavut is still set to land in Pangnirtung Oct. 3, Iqaluit Oct. 5 and Sanikiluaq Oct. 13, and finishing its season in Inujivik according to NEAS’s sailing schedule.
