NTI president clarifies statement on Inuit writing system
“The board is not skeptical at all”
I am writing to you today to clarify statements in the article entitled, “Inuit org president urges go-slow approach to Roman orthography.”
In the article, you state that the NTI Board of Directors is skeptical of ITK’s recommendation to adopt Roman orthography to create a unified writing system for Inuktut.
The board is not skeptical at all. However, we do believe that this process will not happen overnight and that it will take time to implement properly.
NTI strongly supports ITK’s recommendation from the August 2015 Unification of the Inuit Writing System Summit calling for a standardized form of Roman orthography.
The board passed a resolution in March 2015 supporting this important initiative and supporting the Government of Nunavut’s movements to standardize Inuktut in Nunavut schools.
NTI also called on the GN to fully engage the public before implementing any new policies or programs that affect language of instruction in Nunavut schools.
NTI looks forward to reviewing a progress report within one year of the summit.
