Nunavik lays foundation for Arctic tourism certification
More than $800,000 earmarked for tourism training in 2013
KUUJJUAQ — The Kativik Regional Government’s sustainable employment department wants to work towards an Arctic-wide certification program for everyone involved in sustainable Arctic tourism.
As a step in that direction, the KRG plans to spend more than $800,000 this year to help 140 Nunavik obtain advanced certification in such ares as mountain biking, snow boarding, skiing, rope climbing, kayaking, trekking, boat safety and wilderness first aid.
The goal: to help build a “low impact” tourism market in Nunavik, said the department’s director, Margaret Gauvin, Feb. 25 at the KRG regional council meeting in Kuujjuaq.
This would “promote Nunavimmiut as leaders in polar tourism” and lay the foundation for a tourism industry focusing on the region’s culture and natural beauty.
Since 2006, more than 150 Nunavimmiut have earned certification in adventure tourism activities.
In 2012, 272 trainees participated in tourism training in 11 communities.
