Quebec provincial police have launched an investigation into a weekend shooting that injured a Nunavik man, the Sûreté du Québec said Nov. 16.
On Nov.14, just before 2:00 p.m., Kativik Regional Police Force members were called to a home in the Hudson coast community of Inukjuak to respond to reports of an teenage male in crisis, the SQ said.
After KRPF officers arrived, the SQ said “gunshots were fired.” The 18-year-old suspect was shot in the altercation, and police say the man is now in stable condition.
The SQ said it is unclear if the suspect was armed during the confrontation.
But a source in Inukjuak who witnessed the shooting, who did not want their name made public, said the suspect pointed a weapon at police right outside a residence, at which point a KRPF officer fired, injuring the 18-year-old.
As required by Quebec law, whenever a citizen is injured or killed during a police intervention, the incident must be investigated by another police force.
SQ investigators have already visited Inukjuak to gather information about the Nov. 14 incident.
