The Kickin’ Caribou Pub, located inside the Hotel Arctic across from the legislative assembly building in Iqaluit, will pay a $5,000 fine and suffer a two-day licence suspension, the Nunavut Liquor Licencing Board ruled March 22.

At a hearing in Iqaluit, the pub admitted serving alcohol to intoxicated persons and allowing intoxicated persons to remain on its premises, in contravention of the Nunavut Liquor Act.

The offences occurred Feb. 3, Feb. 6 and Feb. 14, the board said in a news release.

“The board took into account the licensee’s acknowledgment of its responsibility for these contraventions of the liquor legislation and its co-operation with liquor enforcement, as well as the steps it has already taken to encourage the safe and responsible use of alcohol on its licensed premises,” David Wilman, the chair of the board, said in the news release.

The board said the bar now has new management and that they are trying to work with liquor enforcement officials to better train their staff.

Under the Liquor Act, the board may suspend liquor licences for periods as long as 12 months.
