Canadian Forces personnel spotted man from aircraft Jan. 24

A weekend search and rescue in Nunavut’s Kivalliq region ended successfully when a 51-year-old man was found between the communities of Rankin Inlet and Arviat.

The Arviat man left Rankin Inlet on a skidoo Jan. 20 en route to Arviat, about 250 kilometres away, the RCMP said in a Jan 26 release. On Jan. 22, family reported the man missing to members of the Arviat RCMP, the release said.

An Arviat-based search and rescue crew set out that same day, with the help of a Canadian Forces Hercules aircraft to search along the Hudson Bay coast, police said.

Two days later, on Jan. 24, military personnel aboard an aircraft spotted the man roughly 34 kilometres from Arviat.

A helicopter was deployed to transport the man to Arviat’s health centre, where he is being treated for minor injuries.

Temperatures in the Kivalliq region of Nunavur have hovered below -30 C over the last few days.

This story was corrected from a previous version that said the man left Rankin Inlet on foot. RCMP confirmed that he left the Kivalliq community on skidoo.
