Nunavut marks International Women’s Day
“We encourage and support women to embrace the important role they play in society,” says Nunavut premier

“Let us continue to encourage and support all women in Nunavut,” said Premier Eva Aariak March 8.
Nunavut’s Premier Eva Aariak called March 8 a day to mark the social achievements of Nunavummiut women as community members, leaders and the makers of history.
March 8, International Women’s Day has been celebrated for more than 100 years, since the emergence of the women’s labour movement across Europe and North America.
“I invite all Nunavummiut to celebrate women today,” Aariak, also the minister responsible for the Status of Women, said in March 8 release.
“Let us continue to encourage and support all women in Nunavut to ensure the future is bright, equal, safe and rewarding for today’s woman and the future generations that will follow in our footsteps.”
Aariak highlighted programs offered through the Government of Nunavut to support women, including the Women’s Initiatives Grants and Contributions Program.
The GN also funds the Qulliit Status of Women Council, which advocates for the equality, well-being and equal participation of women in Nunavut and society.
“This government encourages and supports women to embrace the important role they play in society, which is what celebrating International Women’s Day is all about,” Aariak said.
