Plans for Nunavut’s first major tourism conference, scheduled to kick off March 19 at the Frobisher Inn, are shaping up in the territory’s capital.

Nunavut Tourism is partnering with CanNord to host the week-long conference on the theme “more than meets the eye.”

And to showcase the full potential of Nunavut’s product, organizers are planning local tours for participants to see exactly what the territory has to offer.

As part of the conference, delegates can take part in Experience Iqaluit Tours, which include guided tours of the city with interpretation of local history, culture and unique infrastructure.

More adventurous delegates can try out dog-sledding, cross country skiing or take a scenic flight tour.

Conference organizers are hoping to see 200 to 250 participants at the conference, which will hear from tourism operators and business owners from across Nunavut, as well as tourism bodies from both Canada and Greenland.

The conference is also expected to get a sneak peak at Nunavut’s first-ever tourism strategy, built on cross-territory consultations held last year.

The 2012 Tourism in Nunavut conference runs March 19 to 23 in Iqaluit.
