A 37-year-old Iqaluit woman faces a charge of assault causing bodily harm, using a weapon, following an incident earlier this week that left another Iqaluit woman with non-life-threatening injuries, police said June 9.
On June 5, at about 10:30 a.m., RCMP members responded to an assault-with-a-weapon allegation at a residence in Iqaluit, police said.
When they arrived, they found a woman with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
The woman, brought to the Qikiqtani General Hospital for treatment, has since been released.
Maggie Kownirk, 37, of Iqaluit, is charged with assault causing bodily harm under Section 267(b) of the Criminal Code.
If prosecuted as an indictable offence, this charge carries a maximum jail term of 10 years. If prosecuted by summary conviction, the maximum penalty is 18 months.
Kownirk will appear July 21 at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit.
