Photo: A blank canvas for Nunavut youth

They’re at it again: From left to right, Cape Dorset artists Salomonie Ashoona, Saaki Nuna, youth mentor Parr Josephee, Tommy Quvianaqtuliaq and Johnny Samayualie are in Montreal this month working with artists Alexa Hatanaka and Patrick Thompson (PA System) to paint a giant mural on a downtown wall. The project, called Qanuqtuurniq — to be resourceful or innovative in Inuktitut — will be unveiled at the corners of Ontario and DuFresne streets in Montreal on Aug. 9. This is the second year Cape Dorset youth will make their mark on a southern Canadian city; in 2015, the group painted a giant image of an elder carrying a snowmobile on his back on a 60-foot high wall in downtown Toronto.
