Photo: A solemn tribute to sailors

A solemn tribute to the sailors who lost their lives during the doomed Franklin expedition are marked on banners—one for each of the 129 members of the expedition—spread evenly across the lawn of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. The museum is currently hosting a joint-exhibit with the Canadian Museum of History entitled “Death in the Ice,” which opened on July 14 and will remain at the museum until March 2018. After that, the collection will be displayed in Ottawa. The first-of-its-kind exhibit showcases relics recovered from the HMS Erebus, discovered in 2014, as well as artifacts recovered by British during the many expeditions sent to the Arctic during the nineteenth century. Sir John Franklin and his crew were last seen by Western eyes aboard on their ships, the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, in 1845 as they sailed into Baffin Bay. (PHOTO COURTESY OF REGINA KOELLNER)
