Photo: ACL buys Migration carving from Igloolik carver

By SPECIAL TO NUNATSIAQ NEWS

A detail from a carving called the Migration by Igloolik carver Bert Hanna, recently acquired by Canadian Arctic Producers, Northern Images and Arctic Co-operatives Ltd. The Migration, which took a year to carve, depicts a story of Inuit migration and relocation as told by Hanna's grandfather. On the carving, the sea creature Sedna sits at the rudder steering the boat. Her hair is groomed while she sails. A shaman drum dancer in the form of a bird stands at the bow of the boat, ready to take flight. The bow is decorated with ivory and baleen dragon head. A second shaman in the form of a walrus navigates the boat, powered by many sea creatures. You can see the entire piece, which measures five feet by seven feet, on the Nunatsiaq News Facebook page.
