Photo: Another blizzard hits Nunavut’s capital

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

With visibility dropping and winds gusting up to 80 kilometres an hour, much of the city of Iqaluit has shut down the afternoon of April 6. The City of Iqaluit has suspended all municipal services, and is asking residents not to venture outdoors. Following the lunch hour, the Government of Nunavut shut down its offices in Iqaluit, including the community’s schools and courthouse. Federal government offices, Inuit organizations, daycares and many businesses also closed for the afternoon. Fire and Ambulance services will be provided unless it's unsafe and/or impossible to do so, but delays can be expected due to weather conditions, the City said. Environment Canada said the blizzard should clear up overnight. For information updates, Iqalungmiut can call the city’s blizzard line at 979-5300 or the GN’s info line at 975-6444.
