Cambridge Bay sees some decked-out vehicles heading down its main street May 18 during the Omingmak Frolics Parade. The activities continue May 19 with non-stop events, including a fishing derby in memory of the late elder Ambrose Aknavigak, a traditional food fair, drum dancing, and snowmobile races. Celebrations for the “Women in action- Steps of hope” walkers will start May 19 and continue into May 20. Walkers Janet Brewster, Elisabeth Hadlari, Jamie McInnis, Donna Olsen-Hakongak, Cambridge Bay mayor Jeannie Ehaloak and Nunavut Commissioner Edna Elias left Bay Chimo May 7 to walk to Cambridge Bay, 220 km away, to raise money for cancer research and promote healthy living. May 18 they camped at about 12 km out from the community and are expected to arrive in Cambridge Bay at about 4 p.m., May 19, with many joining them for their last km to the finish line. The proceeds from the walkers’ fundraising effort will go to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, which supports the Edmonton Cross Cancer Institute and breast cancer research. Not in Cambridge Bay?
