Photo: Cruise ship burns in Norway

Here the Nordlys, a passenger ferry and cruise ship that regularly sails from southern Norway to the Arctic city of Kirkenes, burns Sept. 15 off the western coast of Norway. Two crew members died and 16 were injured after the ship caught fire close to the port of Ålesund. The fire, which started after an explosion in the engine room, led to the emergency evacuation of more than 200 passengers and 55 crew members. “Nothing indicates sabotage or points to terror,” said Trygve Oedegaard, head of operations at the Ålesund police. Hurtigruten, the company that operates the Nordlys and 11 similar ships, organized emergency passports and provided money for the passengers, who had to leave their belongings on board after their evacuation.
