Photo: Fresh food for sale in Iqaluit

Iqaluit residents got a chance to pick up some products from the last harvests of the fall season in southern Canada Nov. 8 at Nakasuk School, where IqaluEat, a citizens’ group for a fresh food co-op, held their second food market. About 300 Iqaluit residents bought up some 1,400 kilograms of fruits and vegetables, as well as cheeses, bread, bagels and a few specialty items shipped directly from western Quebec and eastern Ontario. Most produce sold at prices lower than local supermarkets, said IqaluEat’s lead organizer, Michel Potvin. Countertops were mostly empty after an hour. The group plans to put on a third market early in the new year, and eventually set up a permanent co-op that will offer fresh food all year round. (PHOTO BY PETER VARGA)
