By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

This fundraiser held at Iqaluit’s Anglican parish hall on Saturday, Jan. 13 aimed at raising money for the five families who lost their homes and belongings in a devastating Jan. 1 fire. Elders and bannock-makers from the thrift shop also attended. To date more than $10,000 has been raised through community donations and a 50-50 sale. The 50-50 ticket sale money helped volunteers buy new backpacks, which they stuffed with useful items for children who lost everything in the fire. Students at Joamie Elementary School also held a bake sale and cake walk last week, raising a total of $2,314, according to school principal Sonja Lonsdale. (FACEBOOK PHOTO)
