Photo: Haunted house welcomes trick-or-treaters in Cambridge Bay
Helen Koaha and Peter Laube wait for the first young visitors to their haunted house on Oct. 31. While Iqaluit children will have to wait until Nov. 1 for their tricks and treats, in the western Nunavut town of Cambridge Bay, Halloween is underway, with the opening of the haunted house which Koaha and Peter Laube, owner of Kalvik Enterprises, put up every year in part of his shop. There, the pair welcome students and members of the public from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31, into a misty darkness where visitors scream as they encounter a wolf with green eyes that howls as they walk by, a giant Frankenstein and a variety of other ghouls. And, for those who dare to be scared, there are treats on the way out. Every year, Koaha and Laube—who skipped watching the election results last night in order to set up the haunted house—invest at least $1,000 in treats and new additions to their haunted house.
