Photo: High-speed cable set for NW passage
Many Nunavut communities can look forward to cheaper and faster internet connections: the world’s longest fibre-optic cable is set to run through the Northwest Passage (seen here from the Coast Guard icebreaker, the Amundsen), the New Scientist journal said March 20. The 15,000 kilometre-cable, to be laid by Toronto-based Arctic Fibre, will cut the round-trip time for tele-communications between the financial hubs of London and Tokyo. But, along the way, the cable will bring high speed connections to Nunavut communities along the way. As part of its project, Arctic Fiber also plans to drill a tunnel through Nunavut’s Boothia peninsula to cut the length of the trip, the New Scientist said.
