Photo: Iqaluit cleans up March 12
A City of Iqaluit snow plow starts to clear streets around Iqaluit’s Lower Base area early on March 12. “Road crews are out early this morning,” said a morning public service announcement from the City. “But there are lots of abandoned vehicles from last night slowing things down. Weather conditions have improved, but please stay off the roads if you can this morning to give crews the time and space they need to make our roads safe.” Government of Nunavut offices reopened March 12 after closing mid-afternoon on March 11, but the airport, federal government offices, and many other offices and businesses and schools remained closed for the morning or day. Four-foot drifts blocked the Federal Road heading towards the industrial park, while an abandoned vehicle — one of a reported 18 around the city — was said to be blocking the normally-busy Four Corners intersection. At about 8 a.m. Environment Canada lifted the blizzard warning for Iqaluit, but said its forecast said blowing snow with visibilities frequently less than one kilometre would continue during the day, with wind gusting to 70 km/hr and wind chills of-37 C.(PHOTO BY JANE GEORGE)
