Photo: Ivakkak race features an Inuit-style ambulance

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Quebec veterinarian Julie Ducrocq shows off her new dog ambulance, used to transport fatigued, injured or loose dogs taking part in the Ivakkak dog sled race. Ducrocq, who has worked in Nunavik for the past decade, has been Ivakkak’s resident vet for the last five years. Last week, her ambulance carried a record of nine dogs after one team’s qamutik broke apart during the race. As part of the 2015 edition of Ivakkak, a total of ten dog sled teams are working their way north up Nunavik’s Hudson coast this week. Mushers and dogs are resting in Inukjuak March 23, and expected to arrive at the finish line in Puvirnituq March 26. (PHOTO COURTESY OF PIERRE DUNNIGAN/IVAKKAK)
