Meet the new faces of Toonik Tyme. From left: Adamee Itorcheak, Pitseolak Alainga and Gideonie Joamie say they want Iqaluit’s premiere springtime festival to focus on its roots when it kicks off on April 12. “Toonik Tyme is a history of people getting together,” said Alainga—a former honorary Toonik and president of the non-profit 123 Go! association president—during a public brainstorming forum for this year’s event schedule at the Qayuqtuvik Society Soup Kitchen, Jan. 17. 123 Go! is a five-member non-profit association (other members Matthew Alainga and Jimmy Noble Jr. not pictured) taking over Toonik Tyme’s event organization after the departure of former Toonik Tyme manager Travis Cooper. The association is calling on the public to submit its ideas for what events to include in this year’s festival, or if they would like to volunteer their services, by emailing tooniktyme@gmail.com. The group is expecting to submit a rough draft of its schedule for 2018’s Toonik Tyme to the City of Iqaluit’s recreation department later this month. (PHOTO BY STEVE DUCHARME)
