Photo: Melting ice art in Copenhagen mirrors melting Arctic

We’re running out of time: hunks of ice are now melting in Copenhagen’s city hall square as part of “Ice Watch,” a project to raise awareness about climate change in the Arctic. Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and Greenlandic geologist Minik Rosing harvested 100 tonnes of ice from a fiord near Nuuk, Greenland, arranging the 12 blocks of ice in a clock-shaped formation. The display, which ends Oct. 29, marks the publication of the fifth assessment report of the United Nations intergovernmental panel on climate change, whose members are meeting this week in the Danish capital. “Today we have access to reliable data that shed light on what will happen and what can be done,” Eliasson and Rosing said. “Let’s appreciate this unique opportunity — we, the world, must and can act now. Let’s transform climate knowledge into climate action.” (HANDOUT PHOTO)
