Photo: No end to storms in Cambridge Bay

By SPECIAL TO NUNATSIAQ NEWS

If Fred Pederson of Cambridge Bay is smiling, perhaps it's because he likes to shovel snow — and that's what he'll have to do to get out of his home, where the front door is blocked from floor to ceiling with snow. Cambridge Bay has been hit by six blizzards so far this winter, which have seen winds strong enough to knock down satellite dishes. On Dec. 13 winds tore the pedestrian street light (Nunavut's first) from its suspension cables The stormy weather has also caused school to be cancelled and workplaces to shut down. As well, many events have been postponed or cancelled. Municipal trucked water and sewage services were also stopped in their tracks, leading many to run short of water this week.
