Photo: Nunavut hotel that supports local charity officially opens

More than 300 residents of Clyde River gather Nov. 7 to help celebrate the opening of the community's Naujaaraaluit Hotel with food and a tour through the new building. Though some guests have already stayed there, the Naujaaraaluit Hotel held its official opening Nov. 7. Instead of a ribbon-cutting, the board of directors of Ilisaqsivik, the organization that owns and runs the hotel, made a katak — a snow block used as the door to an iglu. The katak was placed in front of the hotel door and, when everyone was ready, the katak was pushed aside to represent the official opening. The hotel is a social enterprise which sends 100 per cent of its profits back to the Ilisaqsivik Society, a local charitable organization that runs community programs in Clyde River.
