Photo: Nunavut Sivunuksavut students complete ASIST workshop

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

The power of knowing and helping: half of Nunavut Sivuniksavut's first year students spent Oct. 22-23 taking an ASIST workshop — Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training — in Ottawa during which they learned how to identify someone who might be at risk, and how to intervene to direct them towards the support they need. Organizers say it was a powerful experience but everyone completed it with a new outlook on their own capacity to help others. The workshop was facilitated by Cecile Guerin and Jack Hicks. A second workshop is now under way for the other half of the first-year class. (PHOTO COURTESY NUNAVUT SIVUNIKSAVUT)
