About 60 Ottawa Inuit, their friends, and other lovers of country foods gather at a Vanier church Oct. 15 to feast on caribou stew, seal stew and ham with mashed potatoes during a monthly free feast hosted by Tungasuvvingat Inuit. But attendees got food for thought along with the usual buffet. With the federal election around the corner, TI invited a few people to talk about how to vote and who to vote for to help get urban Inuit ready for the Oct. 19 election. Elections Canada staff explained voting procedures and then later on, the incumbent MP for Ottawa-Vanier, Liberal Mauril Bélanger and NDP hopeful Emilie Taman addressed the crowd. Some regulars ignored the speeches and socialized but others shushed their noisy neighbours and asked questions about housing and food security. Read more about the event later on Nunatsiaqonline.ca.
