Nunavut Premier Peter Taptuna and Cathy Towtongie, president of Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, kicked off the Sivimmut IV Conference in Iqaluit, Dec. 1, with opening addresses on behalf of the Government of Nunavut and NTI, respectively. The Nunavut Economic Forum’s three-day conference will lay the groundwork for the second “Nunavut Economic Development Strategy,” which will serve as a guideline for the territory’s economic development policy for the next decade. Taptuna told Nunatsiaq News oil royalties are a possible means to economic independence for Nunavut but Towtongie cautioned against basing Nunavut’s economy solely on extraction of natural resources.
