Photo: Snow melts causes run-off problems in Iqaluit

Melting piles of snow like this one are blocking culverts around Iqaluit where they add more water into the potholed-streets of the city. City crews open about 2,000 culverts every spring to let melt water and rain run to the Frobisher Bay, Iqaluit mayor Madeline Redfern said May 7 in a Iqaluit public service announcement. But this spring crews have noticed more snow piles than usual on private properties, she said, and these snow piles are making it even harder for them to reach and clear blocked culverts. The melt is also streaming on to the roads, “causing more potholes and damage to the shoulders.” Problem areas, such as potholes, blocked culverts and pooled water, are being addressed, she said. Meanwhile, “your patience & cooperation is appreciated.” (PHOTO BY DAVID MURPHY)
