It was a big, hard sun in Iqaluit on Tuesday, despite outdoor temperatures falling below -40 Celsius with windchill. But when conditions are just right, the freezing weather can make for a spectacular light show when the sun crosses the horizon. Parhelia, or “sun dogs,” occur when light refracts off ice crystals floating in the atmosphere, creating the illusion of two other lights in the sky on either side of the sun. After about one month since the winter solstice, Iqalungmiut are getting nearly six minutes per day of additional sunlight as of Jan. 23, and the day continues to grow longer.
