The Toonik Tyme festival’s closing community feast in Iqaluit, April 9, featured a fur and sealskin fashion show that showcased a rich mix of traditional clothing, as displayed by these women and children, as well as modern dress inspired by traditional designs. “Sealskin is something that was a taboo,” said fur garment designer Meeka Kilabuk, who organized the fashion show. “People didn’t want us to hunt seals anymore, but we continue to hunt, continue to eat seal meat, and continue design and make beautiful sealskin garments.” (PHOTO BY PETER VARGA)
