Construction on what has been called the City of Iqaluit's biggest single infrastructure project ever — the $40-million aquatic centre — has been ramping up this summer with the recent sealift delivery of construction materials. The energy-efficient facility, designed by Stantec and photographed under construction here on Aug. 20, will house a 25-metre lane pool, a leisure pool with water slide, a whirlpool, saunas and fitness facility as well as a gym, elders centre and concession stand. If construction goes as planned, Iqalungmiut could be swimming by December 2016, Iqaluit's recreation director Amy Elgersma told city councillors at a July 14 council meeting.
