Photo: New Nunavut hotel will support local charity

The first guests to stay at Clyde River’s new Naujaaraaluit Hotel pose recently in the dining area. But it’s more than just a hotel. Naujaaraaluit is something called a social enterprise — a business whose profits are funnelled 100 per cent into a charitable organization. In this case, the money goes to Ilisaqsivik, an award-winning, Inuit-run charity in Clyde River that offers dozens of community-based health and wellness programs for children, families, men, women and elders. With a shortage of hotel rooms in town, Ilisaqsivik decided to start up a hotel which they hope will provide much-needed core funding. In this photo are, standing, from left, Josie Pitseolak, Jimmy Paton, Pitsiula Michael, Asenath Ataguttak, Meleah Nookiguak and Elisapee Quassa. Sitting are Terry Garchinski and Eena Kooneeliusie.
