Nunavut police have charged four Igloolik youth in connection to a series of break-ins and thefts in the Baffin community over the last two weeks.

The RCMP said Nov. 17 that four young offenders, aged between 13 and 16, have appeared before a local justice of the peace to hear charges linked to one or more incidents reported at various buildings in Igloolik this month.

Between Nov. 1 and Nov. 15, Igloolik RCMP responded to break-ins at the Igloolik airport building, the community’s co-op store, its Nunavut Arctic College campus, a local business, the elementary and high schools, and storage facilities in the community of about 2,000 people.

Police say stolen merchandise from some of the break-ins is valued at several thousands of dollars.

The youth are also alleged to have caused significant damage to buildings, and to have destroyed food used for the elementary school breakfast program.

“These break and enters appears to have caused a recent price increase on consumable goods at the local stores,” the RCMP said in a Nov. 17 release.

Four youth have now been released on strict conditions, including a curfew.

But the police investigation is ongoing, and RCMP are asking Igloolik residents to call the local detachment at (867) 983-0123 if they can provide any other information.
