A 29-year-old Montreal man has been charged in connection with the death of Nellie Angutiguluk, an Inuk woman originally from Nunavik.

On July 8, Montreal police arrested Kwasi Alfred Benjamin and charged him with the first-degree murder of Angutiguluk. Benjamin made his first appearance in Quebec court on that charge July 9.

Police first discovered the body of Angutiguluk, also 29, May 18 in an apartment in the city’s Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood.

The woman’s death, which was initially considered suspicious, was later deemed homicide by Montreal police. Officers reached out to the public earlier this month looking for more information about the final days of Angutiguluk’s life, hoping to track her killer.

Just a week later, police charged Benjamin with her first-degree murder.

Police could not say how the two were acquainted. A Facebook profile in Benjamin’s name shows he was “friends” with Angutiguluk, and a handful of other Inuit women.
