Police are investigating the sudden and suspicious death of a teenager in Baker Lake over the weekend.

The Nunavut RCMP’s Major Crime Unit and the Nunavut coroner’s office are in the Kivalliq community of about 2,000 this week looking into the weekend death of a 14-year-old girl.

A Jan. 17 news release from the RCMP only says the girl was found unresponsive at a local residence. The coroner’s office has requested an autopsy “as the cause of death is unknown,” the release said.

Community members say the girl attended a house party with a group of local youth last Saturday, Jan. 13. She was discovered the following morning, Jan. 14, and declared dead on the scene.

No one has been arrested or charged in connection with the girl’s death.

The Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health has sent in a crisis response team that was expected to arrive today, to assist the family and the girl’s friends and classmates at Jonah Amitnaaq school.
