RCMP charge Igloolik man after police officer suffers gunshot wound

Emergency response team tackles Oct. 4 shooting spree

Police have now laid charges against an Igloolik man after an Oct. 4 shooting spree left one RCMP officer wounded, an Oct. 6 press release from the RCMP said.

Donovan Iyerak of Igloolik has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and four counts of attempted murder. He is scheduled to appear at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit Oct. 7.

Around 9 a.m. on Oct. 4, police in Igloolik responded to man armed with a rifle who began shooting at their vehicles.

The man then fled, police said.

Soon after, the man fired shots at the Igloolik RCMP detachment and other buildings in the community.

The incident left one RCMP member with gunshot wounds, police said.

The Nunavut RCMP’s Emergency Response Team arrived later, the release said. Around 2 p.m. a man surrendered to the ERT members and was arrested.

The wounded officer was transported to Iqaluit and then Ottawa for medical treatment, the release said. He is still recovering.

“The RCMP would like to thank the community of Igloolik for their patience and co-operation during this difficult situation,” police said.

The investigation into this incident is continuing.
