We were saddened to hear the passing of our brother-in-law, stepfather, step-grandfather — a partner, friend, father and grandfather, military veteran, engineer by trade and an extremely talented artist — Mr. Donald Chart.

Don, 83, died peacefully at the Winchester Hospital near his home in Iroquois, Ont. on Nov. 30, 2015.

Born in London, England on May 15, 1932, Uncle Don, as we affectionately called him, led an interesting life serving in the British military. He came to Canada and made the North his home for many years.

His former work colleagues at Nunavut Housing Corp. will remember him well.

But for our family, he was one of us. And the only one who had an English accent.

He was a partner to our late sister, Martha Arreak, for many years. Together, they traveled to exotic places we can only dream of.

He also was a great father figure to our sister’s five boys, David, Barnaby, Jerry, Sam and Ishmael and a wonderful step-grandfather to our sister’s oldest grandchild, Patricia.

Don had a talent for water colour painting and depicted, through his intricate artwork, the places he’s visited and people he’s seen. His work was rarely seen in public but to us, it was worthy of museum display.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you uncle. May you rest in peace. You will be forever in our hearts.
